Defnyddir technolegau iaith i ddatblygu systemau meddalwedd sydd â’r nod o ymdrin ag iaith ddynol, ac felly yn aml fe’u gelwir yn ‘dechnolegau iaith ddynol’. Daw iaith ddynol mewn ffurfiau llafar ac ysgrifenedig. Er mai lleferydd yw’r ffurf hynaf ar gyfathrebu ieithyddol o ran yr esblygiad dynol, bydd y rhan fwyaf owybodaeth gymhleth yn cael ei storio a’i throsglwyddo drwy’r gair ysgrifenedig.
