Abstract

Combat-related transfemoral amputations are associated with major contamination and blood loss. Adequate treatment combines principles of orthopedic trauma surgery and those of critical care. Patients will frequently present in hemodynamic shock. Care for these injuries involves vascular control, resuscitation, and urgent debridement prior to rapid evacuation.
