Abstract

This is a retrospective paper about the ONOMATURGE expert system for Hebrew word-formation. It still stands out, because it had the ambition of not only generating Hebrew nonconcatenative derivation (as well as Hebrew compounds), but also of evaluating the psychosemantic transparency of candidate coinages, and of ranking them. As to the lexical database, it was the archetype of deeply nested relations as being applied to lexicography, a precursor of the approach popularised with the rise of XML.
