Fat Grafting Supplemented by Adipose-Derived Stem Cells for Breast Augmentation

Stem Cells in Aesthetic Procedures

Abstract

Recent advances in the sophistication of grafting procedures and the understanding of the biology of adipose tissue have enabled the development of autologous fat grafting to the breast for cosmetic augmentation. Additionally, supplementing the graft materials with adipose-derived stem cells, isolated through liposuction, has been reported to be beneficial for enhancing graft retention. Despite the potential benefits of the technique, concerns have been raised including donor site morbidity and the obstruction of breast cancer detection, particularly for high-risk patients. The efficacy of the technique also needs further investigation. Multicenter, randomized clinical trials are recommended to ensure that fat grafting with or without adipose-derived stem cells is a safe, effective, and evidence-based procedure for breast augmentation.
