Abstract

Foreign students learning Chinese grammar make errors for many reasons, among which the inappropriate use of functional words maintains a great proportion. Methods for the automatic recognition of the errors are limited. We start with the conjunctions in Chinese functional words knowledge base, analyze and summarize the appropriate usage and problematic usage of conjunctions, and propose a usage-based method to detect the grammar errors which are caused by inappropriate use of conjunctions. The results based on HSK prove that the method is simple and effective. It will be of great help in teaching Chinese as a second language.
