Abstract
Urban expansion is a spatial and demographic process and refers to the increased importance of cities as a concentration of population within a particular economy and society. Urban expansion can be mapped, measured and modeled by using remote sensing data and GIS techniques along with statistical measures. In this study three temporal satellite images of 8 years interval (2002, 2006 and 2010) have been classified to determine the urban expansion of Kunming in eight different directions. Pearson’s chi-square test and Shannon’s entropy method have been applied to calculate the degree of freedom and degree of sprawl towards the analysis of urban expansion and the urban expansion intensity index towards the expansion rate. The result shows that the city of Kunming has a high degree of freedom, high sprawl but a decreasing tendency. With a rapid development rate, the city gradually tends to be more compact.
