Abstract

The atlas is fractured by axial/vertical trauma such as diving injuries. The C1 ring fracture could have components pushed apart outwards, Jefferson fracture (see Fig. 1). Even if the centre for the regulation of cardiopulmonary activity is at this level, and a dislocation involves a danger to life, the atlas fractures are, as a rule, fairly stable and associated with a good prognosis, since damage to the spinal cord is uncommon.
