Abstract
The widespread use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a screening test for prostate cancer resulted in earlier detection of high-grade prostate cancer at a curative stage. However, insignificant cancers are often detected which lead to overtreatment of low-risk disease (Krakowsky et al. 2010). The prevalence of prostate cancer increases with age; 34 % of men in the fifth decade of life and up to 70 % aged 80 years or older have histologic evidence of prostate cancer (Bonekamp et al. 2011).
