Image Guided Prostate Cancer Treatments

Abstract

Targeted (focal) prostate tumor ablations have been performed most commonly by cryotherapy (freezing) and HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). With increasing published data on thermal-based prostate focal ablation, confidence in this treatment approach is increasing. MRI-guided laser ablation offers a minimally invasive precision prostate tumor ablation that can be thermally monitored during treatment (thermometry) and has few to no side effects. This chapter offers a rationale for and clinical description of focal laser ablation (FLA) as well as thermometry to monitor tumor ablation.
