Abstract

The effective use of psychotropic medication in cancer care involves attention to both pharmacology and symbolic communication. Prescribing is part of a therapeutic relationship in which meaning as well as medication is dispensed. Numerous factors influence the meaning of medication, including preexisting psychiatric condition, personal history, disease phase, disease stage, ethnic, cultural and individual differences, and cancer-specific symptoms. Cancer patients are understandably sensitive to the implications of what their doctors say and do, so both a prescription and the lack of one are communications about the doctors’ perception of the nature and severity of their patients’ condition and their concern for them. Perceived uncertainty, loss of control, and feelings of dependency are common themes. Integrating patients’ concerns into prescribing practice can enhance treatment. Combining and integrating psychotropic medication and psychosocial interventions are important aspects of oncological care.
