Abstract
Since the establishment of breast-conserving therapy 20 years ago it has become well known that structural changes like parenchymal scarring, local oedema, seroma, fat necroses and dystrophic calcification occur at the original tumour site. Physicians have learned to handle these alterations and to differentiate them from local recurrence (Krishnamurthy et al. 1999). Currently, for radiologists it is important to know whether IORT, as a result of the local radiation effect, causes increased or other forms of structural changes in the tumour bed that need to be accounted for in follow-up examinations.
