Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mainly represented by Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, broadly includes other diseases that can cause inflammatory lesions of the intestine such as intestinal tuberculosis, Behçet’s disease, and diverticulitis. In these conditions, extraintestinal manifestations involving the orogenital mucosa, skin, eye, and joints can occur in varying percentages of incidence depending on clinical settings. Although the precise mechanism linking between the pathogenesis of IBD and its extraintestinal manifestations is unclear, there seems to be multifactorial contributing factors. Extraintestinal manifestations of IBD can be classified into specific, reactive, and associated conditions in relation to gastrointestinal tract lesions.

In this chapter, extraintestinal manifestations of IBD are described, in the order of skin and mucosal manifestations, eye manifestations, and joint manifestations. Understanding the common extraintestinal manifestations that develop in IBD patients can lead to early diagnosis and better management of IBD.
