Abstract

Electron Microscopy - “the Big Eye of the 20th century in decline” - is a technique no longer widely used in the field of surgical neuropathology of the central nervous system (CNS), as it has been replaced by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with ever-growing numbers of more or less specific, commercially available antibodies. However, it is still a powerful technique if diligently used, especially if applied to small brain tumour biopsy specimens. In this chapter, the author will systematically review ultrastructural findings in the numerous categories of brain tumours. Over the last quarter of century, the author has studied a large collection of brain tumour specimens immediately fixed for electron microscopy in the neurosurgical theatre, and has published several reviews (Liberski, 1996a; 1996b; Liberski and Kordek, 1997; Liberski, 1998) and books (Liberski, 2001; Liberski and Papierz, 2005; Liberski et al., 2011).
