Clinical Review of Vascular Trauma

Abstract

Vascular injuries below the knee present a difficult challenge to vascular surgeons due to the complex nature of injuries in this anatomic region. A multidisciplinary approach is vital in management as there are commonly associated nerve, bone, and soft tissue injuries all of which affect outcomes. There are several principles in the management of these injuries: 1) control hemorrhage; 2) assess limb viability; 3) evaluate injuries to bone, nerve and other soft tissues; 4) define the vascular anatomy; 5) perform vascular reconstruction if indicated; and 6) prevent or treat reperfusion injury and compartment syndrome. Prompt management of these injuries with proper prioritization of a multidisciplinary team can help improve the overall care for these patients.
