Abstract
This chapter outlines the efficacy of using social media in healthcare. Written by a UK-based Crohn’s disease patient, the chapter describes how contemporary IT tools and techniques can be used effectively to actively engage patients in their own care. Examples of patient-to-patient interaction via new social media are provided. The concept of the “i-patient” is introduced and the need to empower both patients and healthcare professionals is suggested.
A patient comes because she’s sleeping 16 h a day, and it takes ten doctors and a coma to diagnose sleeping sickness
