Grundlagenwissenschaftler definieren viszerale Schmerzen als Schmerzen, die von viszeral innervierten Organen des Thorax, Abdomens und Beckens ausgehen. Kliniker sprechen von Brust- (thorakalen), Bauch- (abdominellen) und Unterbauch- sowie Beckenboden- (pelvinen) Schmerzen (Prithvi 1999).
