Zusammenfassung

Der australische Schwimmtrainer und ‑forscher Brian Blanksby erzählte 1980 folgende Anekdote über die Auswahl von Talenten im Schwimmsport: „Die erste Talentselektion erlebte ich in der Schule. Als die Klasse in das Schwimmbad marschierte, stand der Trainer bei der Tür, schaute auf den Boden und nahm verschiedene Leute aus der Reihe – diejenigen, die beim Gehen die Füße nach außen stellten. Er ließ sie sich auf das Brustschwimmen konzentrieren. Die Schule war in Wettkämpfen im Brustschwimmen immer sehr erfolgreich“ (S. 13). Ein Journalist stellte Melanie Molitor, Mutter und Trainerin der jüngsten Weltranglistenersten im Tennis, Martina Hingis, die Frage, wann und woran sie das besondere Talent ihrer Tochter entdeckt habe. Sie antwortete: „Was heißt Talent? Ihr Talent war, dass sie so hart arbeiten konnte.“ Im Hochsprungwettbewerb bei den Weltmeisterschaften 2007 siegte Donald Thomas. Er war ursprünglich College-Basketballspieler und hatte erst vor 16 Monaten mit einem gezielten Hochsprungtraining begonnen.
