Abstract
In this chapter we group melanomas with unusual but distinctive features. A few of them have a peculiar architectural pattern (i.e., polypoid melanoma and verrucous melanoma), whereas others have distinct cytological features (i.e., balloon cell melanoma and rhabdoid melanoma). Their peculiar features occasionally make these lesions the cause of misdiagnosis (Rongioletti and Smoller 2005; Magro et al. 2006, Barnhill and Gupta 2009). In general, these variants are too rare for prognostic studies, but there is no current evidence that, aside from their recognition, there are significant differences in clinical outlook. Polypoid and verrucous melanoma may present difficulties in establishing thickness measurements.
