Abstract
Nevoid malignant melanoma has a cytological component in which most cells are similar to those of the common “banal” nevus (Wong et al. 1995; Zembowicz et al. 2001). In some cases, the architecture of the lesion is deceitfully similar to that of a junctional (“fl at”) nevus or to a polypoid or papillated “Unna” nevus or to that of a compound “Miescher” nevus. Often the lesion is symmetrical with sharp lateral margins, and the junctional or intradermal component not immediately apparent as atypical.
