Zusammenfassung
Eine Vielzahl der Stoffe, die in der Prozessindustrie gehandhabt werden, sind entzündbar (früher mit „brennbar“ oder „entzündlich“ bezeichnet). Sie reagieren mit Sauerstoff unter Freisetzung von Wärmeenergie.

Streng genommen ist die Angabe des Volumenanteils nur bei niedrigen Drücken sinnvoll. Bei höheren Drücken muss man das Realgasverhalten berücksichtigen; deshalb gibt man dann oft Stoffmengenanteile (Mol%) an.

Der Arbeitsplatzgrenzwert (AGW) ist der Grenzwert für die zeitlich gewichtete durchschnittliche Konzentration eines Stoffes in der Luft am Arbeitsplatz in Bezug auf einen gegebenen Referenzzeitraum. Er gibt an, bei welcher Konzentration eines Stoffes akute oder chronische schädliche Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit im Allgemeinen nicht zu erwarten sind (§ 3 Abs. 6 GefStoffV [48]).

«ERPG-1:» Die maximale luftgetragene Konzentration, bei der davon ausgegangen wird, dass innerhalb dieses Wertes beinahe sämtliche Personen bis zu einer Stunde lang exponiert werden könnten, ohne dass sie unter mehr als leichten, vorübergehend nachteiligen gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen leiden bzw. ohne dass sie einen eindeutigen definierten unangenehmen Geruch wahrnehmen.
«ERPG-2:» Die maximale luftgetragene Konzentration, bei der davon ausgegangen wird, dass innerhalb dieses Wertes beinahe sämtliche Personen bis zu einer Stunde lang exponiert werden könnten, ohne dass sie unter irreversiblen oder sonstigen schwerwiegenden gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen oder Symptomen leiden bzw. solche entwickeln, die die Fähigkeit einer Person beeinträchtigen könnten, Schutzmaßnahmen zu ergreifen
