Abstract

Mention has been made earlier book about the Common Metadata for Climate Modelling Digital Repositories (METAFOR) project, which is an EU Framework 7 project with the aim of developing a Common Information Model (CIM) to describe climate data and the software models and modelling environments that produce this data in a standard way. Climate modelling is a complex process, requiring complete and accurate metadata (data describing data) to accurately characterise and differentiate between different climate model datasets. The CIM extends the metadata used in existing data repositories and addresses issues like metadata fragmentation, gaps and duplication.
