Abstract
If the biodiversity of the Białowieża Forest is to be retained, all large herbivorous mammals within it should be present at numbers below the ecological carrying capacity of the environment. The needs of the European bison should nevertheless be assigned priority status, since there is no other forest complex in Poland in which such a large population of bison could function.
