Abstract
The retention of a species in liquid chromatography can be expressed in terms of the distribution coefficient relevant to the partition function of a polymer between the flowing and the stagnant liquid phase in the column, which correspond to the interstitial volume V i (i.e. the volume of the solvent outside the particles of the packing) and the pore volume V p.
