Abstract

‘Scrapping ships, sacrificing men’ was the title of a compelling series of articles published in the Baltimore Sun in 1997. Awarded with the Pulitzer Prize, these investigative reports revealed the dark side of a little-known ‘reckless industry’, illustrated the environmental and social costs involved, and accused, among others, the U.S. Navy and Defense Department of sending its hazardous problems to South Asian beaches.
