Zusammenfassung
Am Anfang eines Lehrbuchs steht üblicherweise eine Definition. Definitionen dienen der Ab gren zung eines Gegenstandsbereichs (lat. definire = begrenzen). Während man in früheren Jahrhunderten davon ausging, dass Definitionen das Wesen bzw. den Kern einer Sache zum Ausdruck bringen sollten, hat sich infolge des linguistic turn in der Philosophie ein eher konventionelles Verständnis von Definitionen durchgesetzt. Definitionen sind dement sprechend weder wahr noch falsch. Sie geben lediglich Auskunft darüber, wie ein bestimmter Begriff zu einer ge ge benen Zeit in einer bestimmten sozialen Gruppe gebraucht wird. Sind Definitionen damit willkürlich? Eine solche Auffassung wäre kurzschlüssig, denn Definitionen sind mit vielen anderen Begriffen, Konzepten und Theorien vernetzt und verweisen damit auf Wissensgrundlagen, die sich auch verändern können. Definitionen akzentuieren bestimmte Aspekte eines Phänomens und eröffnen eine inhaltliche Auseinandersetzung darüber, wie ein bestimmter Wissensbereich verstanden werden soll.
