Zusammenfassung
Eine Herztransplantation wurde erstmals 1967 durch Barnard durchgeführt (Barnard 1967). Die Operationstechnik wurde im Wesentlichen in Stanford entwickelt und nach Einführung des Cyclosporins (Borel et al. 1976) und der transvenösen Biopsie (Caves et al. 1973) Anfang der 1980er Jahre die wichtigste Therapieform bei terminaler Herzinsuffizienz. Die heterotope Technik wurde erstmals 1974 durch Barnard u. Losman (1975) durchgeführt, hat aber aufgrund der damit assoziierten Probleme und den entsprechend schlechteren Ergebnissen heutzutage keine Bedeutung mehr. In der westlichen Welt wurden bislang mehr als 100000 Herztransplantationen durchgeführt. In Deutschland fällt ihre jährliche Zahl nach einem steilen Anstieg in den 1980er Jahren immer weiter ab und liegt mittlerweile anhaltend bei < 400 Eingriffen pro Jahr.
