Abstract

Trade in Europe is currently recovering from the impact of the financial crisis, with a sharp increase in the volume of international trade with Asia—opening up new perspectives and opportunities for trans-regional, trans-European, and Euro-Asian cooperation for Greece. The country, therefore, must exploit the unique advantage of its strategic location of connecting the South East Europe with the Black Sea basin and the Mediterranean Sea. Based on the above, this chapter gives an overview of the initiatives and actions currently taking place with regard to the European transport networks, their planned extensions, and the establishment of Euro-Asian links, all of which affect Greece’s transportation system and economy. In addition, this chapter provides potential actions and strategies having the scope of strengthening its position as a key player in region and upgrading the country’s role to an important transport node in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in the maritime sector.
