High Interstitial Stainless Austenitic Steels

Part of the book series: Engineering Materials ((ENG.MAT.))

Abstract

The value of the new HIS is examined in comparison to known austenitic steels. The unique combination of strength, ductility, wear and corrosion resistance as well as nonmagnetic behaviour of HIS is closely related to the structure. This is shown by a multiscale approach from the electron structure to the properties of workpieces under a variety of loading conditions. Besides this scientific value of the present book, the technical value is concerned with the feasibility of hot and cold manufacture of HIS. Based on the achieved in-service properties and preliminary production experience, areas of application are proposed.
