Abstract
Thermodynamic calculations with the THERMO-CALC® program were used to narrow down the alloy concentration of new HIS. Isothermal and isoplethal phase diagrams helped to define the range of the interstitial elements C and N as well as of the substitutional elements Cr and Mn (plus optional Mo or Cu). Based on these considerations three steels with about (mass %) 18Cr, 18Mn, 0.6 N and carbon were industrially produced to give a C + N content of 0.85, 0.96 and 1.07, respectively. They are designated as CN85, CN96 and CN107. These hot worked HIS are supplemented by similar steel castings and grades with Mo or Cu.
