Abstract

The Chapter present evolution of FAO Global Forest Resources Assessments started in 1945 to provide globally consistent comprehensive information on forests of the world on a periodic basis. The discussion is divided into three parts viz. early assessments during 1948-74; the recent assessments during 1980-2010; and the future outlook. A critical issue for the future assessments, as in the past, is inadequate country capacity in the non-industrialized regions to collect and provide comprehensive data and analysis needed for growing international needs of information. Keeping this in view, the future FAO FRA undertakings need to include country capacity building as an integral part of the assessment process and develop appropriate institutional linkages between the two programmes to ensure continuity and mutuality.
