Artificial Weathering and Drying of Compacted Cohesive Fill in a Large-Scale Environmental Chamber

Unsaturated Soils: Research and Applications

Abstract

When evaluating the suitability of new construction materials for flood embankments, the drying behaviour of the tested materials is of special interest. Cracks may be detrimental to embankment safety in the event of flooding. The paper introduces the design and instrumentation of a new environmental chamber to study the weathering and drying behaviour of flood embankment profiles under controlled atmospheric conditions. Results of a verification run are presented.
