Abstract

Slab Rehandling Problem is a new style of warehousing problem stemmed from Material Preparation Area in slab yard in steel industry which is essential to the operations efficiency of the slab yard and also coordination between continuous-casting and hot-rolling stages. SRP is to reassign storage locations of slabs in MPA under the constraint of no further shuffles during the retrieving process, with the objective of minimizing the number of rehandles in reassigning process and maximizing the empty stacks cleared up. Few literatures studied exactly the same problem as SRP. For its combinatorial and dynamic nature, a basic heuristic and a cut strategy-embeded filter & fan algorithm are proposed to solve it separately. Experiments on real data collected from steel industry proved the effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm proposed. A lower bound of the problem is also proposed as a measurement of the algorithm proposed.
