Abstract

Most people don’t know that Michael Fellows’ efforts to introduce mathematics to the public went beyond Computer Science Unplugged and engaged a bold, new venue — inventive, inquisitive theatre. He wrote several plays, but this chapter will only give a brief description of the Four Cowboy Melodramas of Mathematics. The term “melodrama” refers to a dramatic work that exaggerates plot and characters in order to appeal to the emotions. Each play proves at least one mathematical theorem. The dramas have been played on stage only a few times.
