Abstract
At the site Kranzberger Forst, a luvisol derived from loess layered above tertiary sediments, supply of nutrients and water are not limiting factors for tree growth. Thus the nutritional status of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) was, according to current tables, in the normal range. Although the proportion of stem wood was similar for beech (82 %) and spruce (76 %), nutrient partitioning was clearly different, with beech holding 35–69 % of the total amount of above ground nutrients in the stem wood, whereas in spruce the proportion was only 18–39 %. Per unit area of assimilation organ beech had much lower nutrient contents than spruce. In combination with its low proportion of green biomass (beech 1 %; spruce 12 %) this is leading to the assumption that beech has a much higher nutrient-related efficiency of carbon sequestration.
