Abstract
Percutaneous procedures can be performed using any of the methods of imaging for guidance. Ultrasound has important advantages that make it preferable to guide procedures when the lesion is visible on sonography. Ultrasound is not expensive and, thus, is widely available. It does not use ionizing radiation, which is especially important in procedures that may be long. It allows real-time continuous monitoring of the position of the needle. The equipment can be moved, making ultrasound particularly suitable for procedures on patients in intensive care units or operating room. The time required for any ultrasound-guided procedure is always less than required when using other techniques for guidance. Finally, it is versatile and allows to select multiple paths to the injury.
