Abstract

People have been studying human–animal interactions for very many years, and this chapter focuses on how our approach to animals has changed over time. Richard Ryder charted these changes elaborately in his book Animal Revolution: Changing Attitudes Towards Speciesism. His promotion of the term speciesism has provided a platform for continuing the social movement with a focus on animals; after equality for women, children, racial minorities, disabled people, and those with abnormal sexualities, it is logical to turn our attention to our treatment of animals. Ryder and others have been influential in describing the history of this movement, which inevitably helps to determine its current and future directions.
