Die Frage nach grundlegenden, evolutionsbiologisch fundierten Beweggründen für menschliches Verhalten lässt sich am besten durch eine zweite Frage, nämlich die, was Lebewesen auf unterschiedlichen phylogenetischen Entwicklungsstufen gemeinsam ist, beantworten. Die elementarsten Reaktionen, die Organismen auf ihre Umwelt zeigen, sind sich auf einen positiven Stimulus zuzubewegen oder sich von einem negativen schädigenden Stimulus wegzubewegen.
