Eine Gemeinsamkeit unzähliger Machtdefinitionen über verschiedene Jahrhunderte und Disziplinen hinweg ist das Verständnis von Macht als die Einflussnahme auf andere gegen deren Willen. Dies löst unvermeidlich Assoziationen zu Machtmissbrauch, Tyrannei und Unterdrückung aus.
