Semiconductor Lasers

Abstract

Semiconductor laser is easily destabilized by optical feedback from an external reflector, since the feedback is an introduction of extra degree of freedom to the laser and it gives rise to instability to the laser. In this chapter, we discuss theoretical background of instability and chaos induced by optical feedback in semiconductor lasers and present the conditions for stability and instability of the laser operations. Various kinds of optical feedback schemes, not only plane optical mirror feedback but also configurations for other optical feedback are introduced.
