O português é a terceira língua europeia com maior número de falantes no mundo, com cerca de 220 milhões de falantes em quatro continentes, dos quais 200 milhões têm o português como língua materna: África, América, Ásia e Europa. É a língua oficial de Angola, Brasil, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Macau, Moçambique, Portugal, São Tomé e Príncipe, Timor-Leste, e desde 2010, da Guiné Equatorial.
