Zusammenfassung
Ein wichtiger Ausgangspunkt für die Entwicklung der komplexen Zahlen war das Auftreten des Symbols
\( \sqrt{-1} \)
in dem Werk "Ars Magna" (1545) von Geronimo Cardano (1501–1576). Das Problem war, zwei (reelle?) Zahlen x1, x2 mit x1+x2 = 10, x1·x2 = 40 zu finden, d. h. die quadratische Gleichung x2 -10x+40 = 0 zu lösen. Formales Ausrechnen ergab \( x_{1,2} = 5 \pm \sqrt{-1} \sqrt{15} \), wobei Cardano Schwierigkeiten hatte, dem Symbol \( \sqrt{-1} \) eine konkrete Bedeutung zu geben.
