Understanding Periodontal Research

Abstract

Epidemiology can be defined as ‘the study of the distribution and determinants of disease in human populations’. Distribution refers to the frequency and the severity of the disease within a population or its subgroups. Frequency is measured in terms of prevalence and incidence and severity or extent by indexes or scales that quantify the levels of the disease. The determinants of disease refer to factors that increase the risk of disease onset or that identify population subgroups most likely to have the disease under consideration.

In periodontal epidemiology, a useful distinction can be made between descriptive and analytical studies. Descriptive studies aim to describe periodontal disease in a population—who has it, to what extent do they have it, and how much they have—while analytical studies seek to explain the occurrence of disease by examining its association with putative risk factors.
