Understanding Periodontal Research

Abstract

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of bacterial origin that results in the progressive destruction of the tissues that support the teeth, specifically the gingiva, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. Although there have been significant advances in the understanding of the cause and pathogenesis of periodontal disease over the past 40 years, the traditional methods by which clinicians diagnose periodontal disease have remained virtually unchanged. The diagnosis of periodontal disease relies almost exclusively on clinical parameters and traditional dental radiography. These traditional diagnostic tools have some significant shortcomings. Demonstrating progressive loss of periodontal support requires longitudinal assessment. Current diagnostic methodologies do not enable us to accurately predict which periodontal sites, teeth, or individuals are susceptible to further periodontal breakdown. Given the limitations of current diagnostic tools, researchers are working to develop techniques that address some of these inadequacies. New approaches and technologies that are being developed to improve the diagnosis of periodontal disease are here presented.
