Abstract

A basic trauma craniotomy is a large craniotomy. This allows the surgeon to remove the most common types of acute intracranial haematomas, such as epidural, subdural and intracerebral haematomas and cerebral contusions. It also provides access to the most usual sources of bleeding. These include large draining veins near the superior sagittal sinus as well as contused tissue in the subtemporal and subfrontal areas and the temporal and frontal poles.
