Abstract
Carbon emissions derived from a variety of sources is a significant contribution to global warming. Emission reduction policies and schemes are currently under development to reduce and discourage carbon emissions from the airlines and at the airport premises and building. Aviation is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions in the environment with significant implications for environmental sustainability, mostly arising from airline management facilities such as airports and other associated precinct tenants. Thus, this paper provides insights into new approaches for “greener” airports. In this paper, we analyse the airport ecosystem with the objective of identifying points of emissions arising in the daily operation of an airport. In addition, we assess the emissions that result from day to day operations of the airport with recommendations for the design of the airports to decrease emissions. We provide a detailed operational flow diagram of the airport and then determine the potential points where emissions are likely to occur. This paper will also discuss the means of accounting for harmful airport emissions. The main objective of this study is to lay foundation for suggesting emission reduction strategies for airports. This study uses the publicly accessible departure and arrival area in the Perth international airport as an exemplar.
