Abstract
Some contemporary experience understand sustainable development of architecture as an holistic concept, not only limited to energy efficiency, but extended to aspects like architectural and constructive quality, functional flexibility and adaptability, and affordability. Thus, an exciting challenge for a sustainable building approach in mild climate might be to design buildings conceived as sensitive organisms with dynamic behaviour, in terms of energy performance, functionality, formal and spatial configuration.
This research, inspired by the examination of some international innovative practices, is aimed to stimulate a smart approach to sustainable design for an adaptive architecture, in order to innovate and renovate energy behaviour and architectural quality of buildings both for new and existing constructions.
