Abstract
Finite element methods have been established to simulate welding processes. However, the inherent complexity of welding process modeling and high computational costs have resulted in simplified methods being used when predicting residual stresses in welded components, especially in multipass welds. Bead lumping is one of these simplified methods. In order to evaluate the effect of lumping schemes on the predicted residual stresses, this paper presents three lumping schemes used while predicting residual stresses in a multipass welded tee joint. The predicted residual stresses are compared and a practical analysis method for effective simulation is proposed.
