Abstract

This paper presents a buck DC-DC converter with PWM and PFM mode which has high efficiency. The converter operates in PWM at nominal load current (>80mA) with the fixed switching frequency of 1 MHz, and enters PFM at light load current (<80mA). When entering PFM, the converter will shut down several modules to reduce quiescent current and make the switching frequency greatly declined. The chip was implemented using a TSMC 0.18um CMOS 1P3M mixed-signal process. As the simulation indicates, the converter can rapidly switch between PWM and PFM according to the load current, which is suitable for battery-support portable system.
