Abstract

The United Kingdom has a track record of events to raise the public awareness of mathematics, although mathematics still remains a closed book to the vast majority of UK citizens, and prominent figures are quite happy to admit to their lack of knowledge of mathematics in situations where they would never dream of admitting they knew nothing of Shakespeare or music. In the UK there is a two-pronged approach to mathematics outreach—outreach to the general public, and finding ways to encourage students to pursue mathematics in schools and universities. Below are some of the attempts that have been made in these two directions to improve the situation.
