Abstract
Nuclear Medicine is largely a diagnostic specialty but it differs from others (e.g. radiology) in that the data obtained depend upon the functional state of the system being investigated. Often information is obtained in a timerelated form (so-called dynamic studies) and is presented graphically with relevant functional parameters plotted against time. Images of the distribution of radioactivity in the body are functional images and only incidentally demonstrate anatomy. Some images are merely a convenient way of displaying for rapid assimilation massive amounts of computer-processed data. These are “parametric” images, such as, for example, the phase image of myocardial contraction.
